present series of cases of peritonitis complicating acute appendicitis. The available biochemical evidence points to an obstructive pattern of jaundice without signs of extrahepatic block. This indicates that the jaundice is of the cholestatic type: and, as suggested by Eley et al. (1965), this is possibly a hepatotoxic effect of the infecting organism, which was E. coli in most of the previously recorded cases and in 8 out of 9 of the present series.
